Fashion’s Night Out: NYC Edition

Fashion week is undoubtedly the most fun time of the year (well, two times a year for those of us who hit the tents), but has recently become fun for all every September with the institution of Fashion’s Night Out–a retail experience that cannot be missed in multiple cities. This year’s FNO is happening THIS Thursday, September 8th and here, on a silver platter, I’ve tallied up my top ten must-visit FNO fetes (in no particular order)!

1. Henri Bendel (712 5th Avenue) 3pm – 11pm

Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman, model Sasha Pivrova, and makeup artist Trish McEvoy will all be on hand, as well as a Bendel’s salon takeover by LYRALOVESTAR & the Hester Street Fair!

2. Kiehl’s Flagship Karaoke Karnival (109 3rd Avenue) 6:30-11pm

Hosted by AJ McLean (yeah, the Backstreet Boys’ resident bad boy!), Kiehl’s is hosting a night of karaoke (sing for free Kiehl’s lip balm), a chance to enter a raffle for Kiehl’s goodies, and complimentary food and alcohol! Other performers and “VIP” celebrity guests will make an appearance!

3. Salvatore Ferragamo Step Out Black & White Fete (655 5th Avenue) 7-9pm

Various socialites will be present at the Ferragamo event, but there’s nothing more fun than a black and white themed party, cocktails and hors d’ourves, with a percentage of sales for the evening benefitting the Lincoln Center Institute! Think they’ll exchange my ugly Ferragamo bag for me?

4. Missoni for Target Pop-Up Shop (1095 Sixth Avenue) 6-11pm

For the 2nd year in a row, Target is offering NYers the opportunity to shop a designer for Target’s collection before it hits the stores. (I believe last year was Rodarte!) I don’t even want to share this information with you because I want everything from the Missoni for Target collection for myself, but since I love you, here it is!

5. Disney Store’s Stylish Ever After (1540 Broadway) 6-11pm

If only I were under the age of ten, this event would be like a fairytale come true. The Disney Store invites you to be “stylish ever after…” Come get glam for Fashion’s Night Out and join us for a magical evening of pampering and accessorizing. Preview the latest Disney-inspired lifestyle product lines while being treated like royalty. Guests will receive an exclusive mini-manicure with the Disney Princess Designer Collection nail polish, and have the opportunity to customize their very own charm bracelet at the Kidada for Disney Store charm bar. Fashionistas will leave smelling as whimsical as Tinker Bell with a special sneak preview of the latest Disney Store Fragrance—Pixie Dust.

This year, the cast of "Glee" filmed an FNO-themed video for Vogue covering David Bowie's "Fashion" Click to view the music video! (P.S. How hot do they all look--especially Mark & Cory!)

6. FAMOUS footwear (Penn Plaza 250 West 34th Street) 6-9pm

Calling all aspiring top models! FAMOUS footwear’s 34th Street location will host a New York Fashion Week Casting Call from 6pm-8pm. The event will be hosted by Vh1 Glam God INDASHIO & America’s Next Top Model Cycle 8 Winner Jaslene Gonzalez. Winners will receive the opportunity of a lifetime to model down the runway at INDASHIO NY Fashion Week Show on Sept 13th.

7.  j.f. lazartigue (764 Madison Avenue 2nd Floor) 6-10pm

I might be a little biased because I’m a budding Broadway star, but this sounds way too fun, plus the proceeds benefit, what else? Impact Broadway! Support my future salary please. :) J.F. Lazartigue creator of Les Soins d’Exception “Haute Couture” for the hair honors Broadway’s musical HIT “Sister Act” in Beauty Meets Broadway. Cast Members will meet & greet lazartigue customers. Portions of the evenings proceeds of products sold will benefit Impact Broadway.

8. Jeffrey New York (449 West 14th Street) 6-11pm

More Broadway stars–but definitely a must for any Harry Potter fans! Daniel Radcliffe and Rose Hemingway from Broadway hit musical “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” will meet and greet fans and autograph Fashion’s Night Out merchandise. Columbia Sportswear will be on hand to showcase their Jeffrey co-branded design collaboration. The Clarins-Courtin girls will be selling FEED 10 bags, specially designed by Claire Courtin-Clarins. The bags will feature 3 of Clarins most iconic products.

9. Lord & Taylor (424 5th Avenue) 6-11pm

Undoubtedly FNO’s wildest event, iconic 5th avenue retailer Lord & Taylor might possibly be hosting the biggest FNO event. The store is transforming each of its floors to represent the different neighborhoods of NYC for your shopping enjoyment! Solange Knowles (Beyonce’s sister) will be on hand to shop and meet & greet fans from 6-9pm on the 2nd floor; Misook Doolittle of the line “Exclusively Misook” will meet & greet from 6-7pm on the 3rd floor; the 4th floor with host Vince Camuto and his fall collection, as well as a gift with purchase; From 6-8pm Jones New York’s resident style expert, Lloyd Boston takes wardrobe classics and shows you 7 Ways To Wear It–you can enjoy a fashion presentation, one-on-one style consultations, and a chance to win a makeover and walk the fashion show’s finale on the 5th floor; Heather Thomsen of Yummie Tummie will hang out on the 8th floor from 6-8pm to break all the laws of shapewear; on the 10th floor from 6-9pm, the NY Jets Cheerleaders will be signing their swimsuit calendars, posing for photos and dancing (you know, if you dare to leave your man up there); There are about 9 other guests slated on each of the unnamed floors that you know you want to see, and Lord & Taylor is a known FNO hangout for celebrities who aren’t otherwise engaged for the evening. See the full FNO roster.

10. Macy’s Flagship (151 West 34th Street) 6-11pm

I don’t dare step near the always-packed even at 9pm on a Sunday night Macy’s Herald Square, but if you’re a fan of any one of the amazing folks on their lineup, 151 W. 34th street is where you’ll want to be this Thursday. Here’s the rundown: Have the opportunity to meet Tommy Hilfiger and Joss Stone on the 2nd Floor in Men’s; join celebrity DJ, Samantha Ronson, for a dance party hosted by Gucci Guilty for Men! Main Floor- Fragrance Arcade; visit the “Karl Lagerfeld for Impulse Only at Macy’s” collection on the 2nd floor and perhaps supermodel Coco Rocha will help you shop; meet designer Rachel Roy and athlete Amar’e Stoudemire as they introduce their cool collaboration for Rachel Rachel Roy and host a “Hoops for a Cause” event. With any $50 purchase of Rachel Rachel Roy, guests will have the opportunity to give their best “shot” on a pop-a-shot machine and raise money for the Amar’e Stoudemire Foundation 2nd Floor, Impulse;  Let celebrity stylist, Derek Warburton, take you on a tour of the fall trends as he updates your wardrobe for the season. RTW- 3rd Floor; Visit luggage on the 9th floor where artist Charles Fazzino will launch the Fazzino by Heys USA Luggage Collection. Brand ambassadors Chrissy Teigen, 2011 SI Swimsuit Supermodel, and Amber Collins, 2011 Miss New York USA, will be on hand to celebrate the occasion; From 5-6pm join celebrity chef Sandra Lee for a cookbook signing on the 8th floor; Love shoes? Designer Spotlight: Jac Vanek (+ a giveaway!)

That's Jac, starring in her own lookbook!

A few months ago I had the great pleasure of meeting up and coming designer Jac Vanek. When I walked into a room full of tongue-in-cheek t-shirts, I had no idea how bubbly Jac would be!

Jac's latest design, never behind the trend curve! $24.00

After learning a little more about her, I learned that she until she attended her first concert solo, Sugarcult, Finch, and Something Corporate playing at her local mall in Orange County, CA, Jac was a pink-loving, popular cheerleader, who no one would’ve normally pictured in that music scene. After convincing her parents to let her attend without supervision, Jac decided that her one true love was in the music business and after working a variety of music-industry jobs that included writing, freelance graphic design and photography, she found her inspiration to create.

Jac's designs (literally) speak for themselves

Jac made her first bracelet and made a few copies for friends that just said one word, “Ruthless”. As the buzz began to grow, so did the demand on the music scene for her bracelets. With the great success of this one bracelet, Jac has now created over 50 different designs on bracelets, t-shirts and jewelry. She’s worked with tons of celebs–everyone from Miley Cyrus to the guys of Cobra Starship–and was a huge influence in the NOH8 campaign. She’s worked with PETA2, Open Our Eyes and Invisible Children. Plus, check out everyone wearing her!

From walking into her room at the Ace Hotel, I instantly knew I wanted to be part of Jac’s success because her designs say things that most graphic tees and bracelets don’t say. They actually said things I wanted to wear, not corny things or clichés like most of the stuff on the market. So…here I am, telling you all about her, because I think you’ll want to wear them too!

Jac’s designs are available online in her store, were recently picked up by Bloomingdales and are available in boutiques across the country…find one near you!

She’s also got a pretty cool Twitter account with over 65,000 followers. (I’m still trying to figure out how she managed that!) When I asked her how she had that many followers she giggled and said, “Honestly? I just don’t know. But it’s cool!”

Jac’s tees, bracelets and jewelry are totally affordable, which is awesome, but free is always better. Which is why….you’re in luck:

I’ve got not one, but TWO prizes to giveaway!

The 1st: a “Believe In Something” t-shirt with a “Believe” bracelet

The 2nd: a “Sorry for Partying” tank top with a “Glamorous” bracelet

How to win? Leave a comment and tell me which one you want to win! It’s that simple. I’ll pick two winners (from a hat) on March 31, 2010.

Really want to win? Promote the contest on your Twitter and/or Facebook! If you post on Twitter make sure you copy me @erikasaprincess and if you promote on Facebook tag @Shoes Shirts & Other Sh!t (you have to be a fan) so I get your extra entries!

Sweeter When Scalloped

Scalloped edges that is! I’m more than a little obsessed with this super sweet trend for spring, because it gives everything a little bit more cuteness. Don’t you think? Boutique of the Week: Poetrie

Petal to the Metal dress $76.99 at Poetrie

Today I discovered Poetrie, another great indie boutique offering clothing, gifts and accessories for the retro-inspired fashionista in you!

Poetrie is a family-run business founded and inspired by five sisters. “Growing up through the 80’s and 90’s, through fields of flannel and baggy overalls, each sister discovered the meaning of fashion. Hand-me-downs were handed down the ladder from sister to sister, transferring fashion sense through a ten year age difference. Different phases in their teenage development inspired individual trend-setting looks, such as adolescent rebellion with black lipstick or idolization of their favorite musicians with Madonna studded-leather jackets. As the craze of shoulder pads and acid wash jeans died down, the sisters grew up, developing their own unique styles. While the sisters have graduated to raiding much larger closets, the clothes they wore still defined important moments of their lives. The blazer and skirt worn to a dream job interview, or a memory of the Betsey Johnson dress worn on that first date with a fiance, made their clothes hold significance and meaning.

The Girl with a Pearl Ring $15.99 at Poetrie

The Poetrie girls want to bring a little poetry back into people’s daily lives. We get it — few people read actual poetry anymore. Memorizing and reciting poems is an art that belonged to another time. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t be thrilled by art in other ways. Poetrie is all about the discovery of truth, the thrill of life, about giving into a moment, or about the pang of memory. All of which can be induced by treasuring a beautiful object, wearing a vintage dress, or doing the clasp on a 100-year-old bracelet.”

Venetian Peacock Vases $51.99 at Poetrie

I love the motto of the Poetrie girls and their boutique carries fabulous clothing from the independent designers, which I love more than anything. Another great e-commerce site, Poetrie has unique items that you may not be able to otherwise find. Poetrie currently ships to the US and Canada.

I’m looking forward to featuring items from Poetrie in future posts for outfit guides, gift guides and more!

If one thing’s for sure, your head definitely needs to stay in the game for the coming months. Hats, headbands, hair clips, fascinators, bobby pins…you name it…they’re not going anywhere. Pick your favorite and stick to it, or mix it up for a different look every day. I for one, am a slave to my Blair Waldorf-esque headbands, but I’ve been experimenting with bobby pins and decorative hair elastics!

Boutique of The Week: Ruche

I wanted to title this post as an “In & Around” but since it’s not just for the NYC-resident or visitor, I’m going to start a new column, “Boutique of the Week”. And while I can’t promise that I will find a new, fabulous boutique every single week, I’m going to try my very hardest to find new fashion destinations as often as possible so that the same stores aren’t always being featured over and over. (You know I love Forever 21 accessories in every single style/trend post!) So, if you’re reading this and you have a boutique that I might like…Contact me!

With that I bring you Ruche. A “modern boutique with a vintage touch” created by husband and wife Mai & Josh (and their adorable pup Roji) back in 2008.

What I want to know is how didn’t I discover this place sooner?

beautiful in bows one shoulder dress $39.99

And by “this place”, I mean Ruche’s fabulous website, shopruche.com, that’s right–it’s an e-commerce boutique! What this means for you is that virtually (no pun intended) anyone can shop there! (They have Worldwide shipping, so yes, to my Canadian readers and all those who are not within the 48 contiguous United States, you also can shop at Ruche!)

forever intertwined heather gray skirt by Ark & Co. $47.99

Ruche is like a meshing of my favorite fashion desinations–Free People, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters and ModCloth, but with the prices of an H&M! Vintage styles that are forgiving on my wallet? Yes, please!

we belong together one shoulder top in sage green $34.99

What I love best, of course, is that because the website was created and is still run by two people who gave up their corporate lives to make their dream happen (along with a few extra team members nowadays), is that Ruche prides themselves on customer service, saying, “We always put ourselves in the position of our customers, as we are customers too! We understand how it feels like to anxiously wait for a package, how happy we are when something is better than pictured online, or how upset we are when that item came damaged or incorrect.”

The Ruche blog has tons of cool DIY decorating advice, like how to make the yarn balls seen here!

As an independently owned boutique, Ruche strives to feature small boutique brands and designers and keep their prices affordable for fashion lovers everywhere!

I think I’ve found my new favorite fashion destination, so look for items from Ruche in upcoming posts!

Oh, and it’s also worth mentioning that Ruche has a pretty cool blog! They have amazing DIY decoration instructions, styling advice and much more.

So what are you waiting for? Get shopping!
