Valentine’s Day Inspiration

Valentine’s Day is far from being my favorite holiday, as I’ve only been in a relationship for it once in my whole life and the day wasn’t exactly what I imagined (although, I’m sure my boyfriend at the time thought it was perfect!), but it’s hard to be a girl and not get caught up in the red and pink plastered everywhere we walk. We want to hope that the guy we’ve been pining after is going to surprise us with the day of our dreams; that mysterious roses from a secret admirer will arrive at our desk while our co-workers nosily look on; that we won’t be eating dinner out with our other single girlfriends and get mistaken for lesbians (à la Carrie and Miranda in Sex & the City); but that’s rarely the case. Guys, frankly, don’t really understand the significance of the holiday at all, and well…neither do I….even though I want flowers and chocolate and a mooshy card, followed by an elaborately planned dinner (even if it’s the best pizza and beer in the neighborhood) that ends with us slow-dancing on a rooftop.

I can’t believe I just admitted that.

Anyway, since my pickings for February 14th are looking slim once again this year (although, there is one guy I have in mind who j’aimerais spend it with…sh!t–now every guy I know reading this that thinks I might maybe sort of-kind of like them a bit is thinking this is about them now and the Carly Simon song “You’re So Vain” has popped into my head…and if the person I have in mind is reading this, he probably doesn’t think it’s about him…isn’t it ironic? Don’t you think? Ugh. Now Alanis Morisette!) I’ve decided that I’m going to celebrate this commercialized day that I formerly used to call “Valendoom’s Day” with the friends and family I love, and stop worrying about my perfect date that’s never going to happen unless the guy I have in mind is, in fact, reading this and decides to act upon it, in which case: I’ll take that last sentence back…but I highly doubt it.

You’re wondering when I’m going to get on with it, eh? Okay, here is some of my favorite inspiration for Valentine’s Day, mostly via Pinterest:

How To: Cut the perfect snowflake

Growing up, snowflakes were pretty much my favorite symbolization of winter, and trumped just about every other holiday decoration I could get my hands on. (I have more snowflake-shaped ornaments than you even want to know). But as a kid, I was given some really crummy explanations of how to cut my own snowflakes and gave up early on, giving way to the over-priced, boring, silver and white ones they sold at the party store with the string already attached.

In decorating my new apartment this year, no matter how much green, red and glitter I spread, something was missing. One night, I was going through Pinterest, when I spotted a snowflake cutting tutorial that was pinned from Life is Sweet via Vintage Junky. I didn’t think much of it until about two days ago, around 1am when I suddenly realized that a big empty overhang between my kitchen and living room could house some dangling snowflakes! I had already made a promise to myself that I was not purchasing anymore Christmas decorations (I may have gone a little overboard at Target), so cutting my own snowflakes seemed to be the perfect compromise of fulfilling my nostalgic love for them, while making my apartment feel a little more wintery!

Believe it or not, cutting your own snowflakes is so much simpler than anyone ever bothered to teach me as a kid, and the trick is really all in how you fold the paper. (I’m convinced that neither my parents or my teachers knew the paper trick, or else they would’ve indulged my love for them.) I used Vintage Junky‘s guide to folding just once and within minutes I was creating tons of snowflakes, all unique and far more beautiful than anything you could buy at a store.

What you need:

How To: fold the paper (crucial!)

1. Cut a standard 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper into a square by trimming 3 inches from either the left or the right side when the paper is held landscape.

2. Fold into a triangle diagonally.

3. Fold diagonally again into a smaller triangle.

4. Mock fold the two longer ends of the triangle toward the middle, for placement.

When both sides appear even, tuck the side of the triangle with the open edges into the middle, and the side with the closed edges on top of it.

5. Flip the new triangle over and trim the tails at the bottom. You are now ready to begin cutting your snowflake!

How To: Cut the snowflake

How you want your snowflake to look is really 100% up to you, but I used Vintage Junky‘s and Life is Sweet‘s designs to help get me started before I made up any of my own.

Things to remember:

  • The open edges of the triangle represent the inside edges of the snowflake. If you want you snowflake to all stay attached as one piece, you should trim/design this side sparingly. If you want the edges of your snowflake to be separated, cut away!
  • The closed fold of the triangle represents the inner parts of the snowflake, so anything you want to be mirrored in the middle should be cut here.
  • The tip is the very center of the snowflake, you can either leave it whole, or play with cutting different small patterns into it.
  • To flatten my snowflakes, I stuck them under a heavy book for about 20 minutes.
  • If you ever want to recreate a snowflake you’ve cut, just fold it back up and copy the design on to a newly folded sheet.

In the time I spent cutting my snowflakes, I kept track of a few of my favorite designs, which are here for you to try as well:

After cutting my snowflakes, I glittered some of them with Martha Stewart fine glitter (white, silver, turquoise, aquamarine, and smokey quartz) using Martha Stewart’s Glittering Glue and let them dry (it takes about half an hour).

Next, I attached hemp string (a little rustic) to them and hung them from my empty overhang at different levels…and voile! My decor finally feels complete.

Looking for more fun things you can with your freshly cut snowflakes? Experiment! Cut snowflakes out of vellum paper for a translucent effect, cut them out of heavier stock and use them as doilies, mod-podge them to hurricanes, mason jars, etc. and make them into luminaries…the possibilities are endless!

Barneys New York Presents: Gaga’s Workshop

It’s Open!

Barneys NY, in collaboration with Lady Gaga, under the creative direction of Nicole Formichetti has released a collection of exclusive, special edition items which will be available for a limited time only at GAGA’S WORKSHOP!

For the first time ever, Barneys New York will convert an entire floor of its Madison Avenue flagship store into a dedicated space designed by assume vivid astro focus, for this holiday initiative. Working with the Barneys New York
team in collaboration with creative director Dennis Freedman, avaf has designed the interiors and signature artwork for GAGA’S WORKSHOP, which will also be featured on special holiday shopping bags and packaging.

And if that wasn’t cool enough, in honor of this project, Barneys is planning to donate 25% of sales from all items featured from the GAGA’S WORKSHOP Collection to the Born This Way Foundation, recently founded by Lady Gaga. The Born This Way focuses on acceptance and bravery in youth, to aid in learning to love and accept each other. (Go Gaga!)

In addition to the collection which is now available in stores, Barneys website has been selling limited-edition items from the “12 days of Gaga” leading up to the grand opening (which are available until they sell out). The items include a keychain with charms, a bow-shaped lollipop, a “diamond” teacup and more, all at fairly reasonable prices. If they whole collection is this affordable–I’m so there!
For those of you who don’t live in New York City, but love Gaga—not to fret! Gaga’sWorkshop.com has the full collection available, you just have to scroll to the bottom of the page to get to it –and it’ll be a fun ride scrolling down–the website is really adorably designed and is interactive! You can even make yourself into a real “little monster”, and play the Gaga Machine to unlock special prizes and codes…I unlocked a video with the code “LADYGAGA” if you want to see Gaga talk about her partnership with Barneys.

I think this initiative is a well-paired one and looks like a lot of fun! I may even pop into Barneys to see the space transformed, despite the holiday crowds I’m sure I’ll face. In fact, I may even pick up a few presents! Are you Little Monsters going to join me?

What to Wear for Thanksgiving: Dresses

A first of many “what-to-wear” posts for the season!…what’s my favorite thing to wear for Thanksgiving? Without a doubt, it’s a dress…in fact, I can’t remember the last time I didn’t wear a dress or some form of stretch pant to Thanksgiving dinner, specifically for the necessity that I want to be able to eat and not have to unbutton anything or be uncomfortable. My favorite holiday, Thanksgiving tends to be my “splurge” day for the year and I often go a little over-the-top–especially with dessert–so I like to be comfy, but still chic, and photograph well in pictures. If you’re like me, I love dresses and so I’ve put together a list of 24, figure-flattering, must-haves ranging from $25-$200 that will keep you looking fabulous even after your second (okay, third) helping of apple pie!

Pan Am Costume

My Pan Am Costume! What do you guys think?!

This was my costume at 4pm on 10/29...it definitely came a long way by doctoring the hat and the wings!

I thrifted a suit from ebay for $16, thrifted my collared white shirt for $8 from a place near my apartment (literally called “Thrift Shop” LOL), bought the gloves for $5, my wings (which I altered to be “Pan Am” wings) for $3 at the Brooklyn Flea and made my own hat from the pattern on the ABC Pan Am tutorial using a hat I deconstructed from Ricky’s for $12, and covering it with excess fabric I cut from my suit!

I worked so hard to make my homemade Pan Am hat to match my suit! It took about 2 hours to get it covered in fabric and looking good, but it was worth it!

I think my costume came out pretty good, I’m getting pumped to hit the bar! What do you guys think?

P.S. Here are more pictures of my costume from last night! (I just posted this quickly before I went out for my birthday party!)

A better-ish picture of my costume!

Nicole (nurse), Dana (Black Swan) and I out celebrating my birthday at Stir NYC!

Loves! Dr. Matt, Nurse Nicole, Fahim--the 80's douchebag, and a poised Pan Am Stewardess, yours truly!

Now all I need is my very own captain….just like Dean! Who’s watching Pan Am tonight?! Tweet with me! @_erikaleigh

How to: Fall Decor DIY on a Budget

When I was a kid I used to deck out our entire house, lawn, and both front doors and stoops with Halloween and fall decorations. Our rooms were covered in faux spiderwebs, complete with those gross-looking plastic spiders; our lawn was filled with ghostly gravestones; our lamppost and stoops were adorned with leafy garland, cornstalks, bales of straw, pumpkins and gourds, and we even had a little ghost to greet people at the door. One year, under my dad’s direction, my birthday guests and I enjoyed a fall DIY—we made our own scarecrows! Undoubtedly, this is my favorite time of year.

Since then, my taste has become slightly more refined and much more grown-up. My apartment is not longer covered in spiderwebs and I have no lawn for the gravestones. Last year, I had minimal decor because the apartment I was living in belonged to my roommate (who had excellent taste, but wasn’t really into seasonal decorating), but this year, my apartment is all my own. Because I went most of the summer without a paycheck (I quit my job when I was doing Sweet Charity) I’m still trying to do everything on a budget. Even though I have a fabulous job now, I’m still only working part-time, but I wanted to make my apartment as fall-inspired and cozy as possible without spending more than $100. Let’s see how I did…

The decor:

A tray on my coffee table filled with fall goodies

My table centerpiece

My entryway

Some garland dressing up the entertainment center where my TV lives

How To DIY:

1. Glass hurricane -$6.99 at Homegoods

2. 5lbs of pumpkins $5 at Whole Foods

3. Moroccan-inspired candle from Pier 1 last year

(similar candles available at Homegoods, TJ Maxx, Marshalls now)

4. An old Christmas tray from my parents’ basement, sanded and spray-painted with Krylon Hammered Gold $3 at Home Depot

5. Vintage coasters inherited from my grandparents – free

6. Leaf-shaped dish by Chantal $5.99 at TJ Maxx

7. Candy Corn $2.50 at Duane Reade (and other drugstores)

8. Vintage mason jar–thrifted at Chelsea parking lot flea $5

9. 2 dozen roses in autumn colors $12.

Split into three vases and arranged.

1. Twig & Rope lantern w/ glass hurricane $5.99 at TJ Maxx

2. Pumpkin Spice Ombre Candle $4 at Michael’s

3. Leafy garland strands -2 6 foot strands $10 /each (on sale 50% for $5 each) at Michael’s;

Cut into 3ft strands and twist together.

Garland has round openings at ends, stuff the cut end into this opening to create the loop.

Place around lantern.

4. Round red placement $1 at Bed, Bath & Beyond

(I only used this because I was afraid the lantern might scratch my table, but I had it and it matched!)

1. Roses from the 2 dozen purchased, split into three vases $12

2. Vintage mason jar, thrifted Brooklyn Flea- $5

3. Hemp twine – free!

It was the tie from my new coasters

3. Decorative corn $3 -D’Agostino (and at other grocery stores)

4. Pumpkin – $7 bodega

I wanted to put this on that shelf, but it’s too fat. Need to find a taller, skinnier one!

1. Leafy garland strands $10 at Michael’s (see above description)

The other 3 feet of the garland cut from the centerpiece twisted together to dress up a boring bookcase!

Total DIY Cost: $77.46

How do you decorate on a budget? What’s your favorite season to decorate?

Halloween Costume: Settled (updated 10-28!)

If you read my Facebook post last night, or know me well, you know that Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, and also tends to be one of the days/weekends of the year that I try to look my best—because my birthday is just 4 days before Halloween and somehow, many of my pictures (and parties) end up in costume! As an actor, Halloween let’s me do what I already love: dress up and play someone else. Who doesn’t love that? So when it came to this year, I was struggling to decide what to wear and was torn between dressing up as a sailor girl, or more recently…a Pan Am stewardess.

The Pan Am stewardesses and their captain, in "Catch Me in You Can"

I started my research last night only to come up with the sluttiest of slutty Halloween costumes to be a stewardess, and almost went with the sailor girl because the costume was a little more refined, but then I took matters into my own hands: I went on ebay.

Christina Ricci stars as Maggie in ABC's "Pan Am"

I found a vintage, sky grey-blue skirt suit for $16 and it was a done deal. With ABC’s new smash hit, Pan Am dominating the airwaves,  I doubt I’ll be the only one with this costume, but I will probably be the most period-correct! The suit is perfect to be sexier at night, with a few less buttons buttoned and no stockings, but still refined enough for when we dress up for Halloween at the office (which I’m very excited for, especially since my sailor outfit probably wouldn’t have been office-appropriate!) Now I’m on the hunt for white gloves, my wings, and most importantly: a blue pillbox hat! Hopefully I can thrift some of these items over the weekend at the flea market! Even more important than that pillbox hat, I’ll be hunting for a Pan Am bowling bag (YES! A costume with a matching bag I can carry!). I’ll be rolling my hair and doing some fabulous 60′s winged eyeliner (which I’ve already been wearing every day).

The cast of ABC's "Pan Am"

If anyone else is as inspired as I am, the way to get the best costume is to thrift your items–all of the stewardess costumes that regular Halloween stores sell are overly sexy (like, in the way that might attract some not-so-welcome attention) and cheap-looking. Believe me: I looked through hundreds. Try ebay, your local Goodwill or Salvation Army, and of course, hit the flea market!

Once my costume is complete, I will be sure to post pictures! Additionally, a lot of lovely ladies who are as 60′s inspired as I am want to get the look too and have been asking for a tutorial on how to do Karine Vanasse’s (Colette from ABC’s Pan Am) 60′s eyeliner. I have perfected the look and as soon as I get my camera this weekend, I will make one and post it!

What are you all planning for Halloween? What are you dressing up as? Or if you have kids or pets, what are you dressing them up as?

Update (10/28) I’m still putting the finishing touches on my Pan Am costume (I’m planning on being VERY busy tomorrow morning!) but I came across something that basically most people have access to (if they’re willing to spend the dough!) to purchase a key piece of their Pan Am Halloween costume: Brookstone!

Yes, good old electronics and travel genius Brookstone is offering an entire COLLECTION of vintage-style Pan Am memorabilia, including the infamous bags that the stewardesses carried:

Brookstone's Replica of the iconic "Pan Am Explorer Carry On" bag.

If you’re willing to go all out money-wise on your costume–the Pan Am Explorer Carry On is the finishing touch. At $89 a pop, you’ll be the envy of all your friends this weekend—and then you’ll end up carrying all their stuff! Hey the jet-age used to be cheap, but it’s not anymore, and neither is this bag—and I sure wish I had an extra $90 to buy it!

AND as you’ll have it–ABC’s Pan Am Facebook page even posted a tutorial on how to make your own wings and pillbox hat! If push comes to shove and I run out of time tomorrow—the hat pattern is definitely going to come in handy! Check it out!

I’ll continue to post things as I find them for my costume! Tomorrow night’s the big birthday bash, so I’m under the gun! Xo, Erika
