What to Wear: To a Beach Wedding

It’s been quite some time since I’ve posted anything on here, which I feel terrible about! I started a new job here, helping with day-to-day operations, marketing and social media (shameless plug: follow us here, here, here and here, please!) and please come in, if you’re in NYC and meet the fabulous stylists and colorists–they all do an amazing job, and the salon is very reasonably priced for New York City.

Okay, what else have I been up to? School–trying to finally graduate this year (my 5th, and longest year of undergrad) and I’m hopelessly trying to find a new apartment, which has been basically draining all of my energy–finding an apartment in  NYC is no easy feat. I know exactly what I want, I found it, and I wasn’t able to close on it, so now I’m forced to look for something else I love just as much, but I’m comparing everything else to the one I loved, of course.

Soooooooooooo….. A few months ago, one of my lovely readers, Michelle, emailed me with a major fashion dilemma–she has a wedding to attend in Maui this month with an invite labeled “cocktail attire”, but was clueless as to what she should wear! Lucky for her, I have a little bit of expertise in wedding guest attire, since basically every person I know is getting married right now.

Beach weddings are definitely confusing–there’s the whole element of “the beach” which is casual, laid-back, and easy-going, and then there’s the element of the “wedding” which usually tends to be a more formal event. So how do you merge the two? I pulled together a few looks that are appropriate for both the beach, as well as the reception, that are stylish, comfortable and appropriate for the occasion.

(From left to right: 1st row- Hale Bob Short Sleeve Beaded Dress $365 at EdressMeTulle Trellis More Coral Pink Dress $62 at Lulu*s, Laundry by Shelli Segal Printed Wrap-Style Dress $225 at EdressMe; 2nd row- Sam Edelman “Gigi” Sandal in Gold Boa $65 at ZapposCoconuts “Romaine” Sandal in Saddle $52.99 at Famous Footwear, Nine West “Weightless” Sandal in White Patent $49.00 at Zappos; 3rd row–Joie “Jovie” Maxi Dress $139 at 6pm.comBCBGMAXAZRIA “Dee” Color Block Halter Maxi Dress $254.72 at Bloomingdales, Tibi Long Dress $407.99 at Zappos Couture.

The result: You can go short or long, beaded or not beaded, sleeved or sleeveless, printed or not printed, color-blocked or all one color, easy fabrics like jersey or (gasp!) cotton can work…but the one element that pulls the look together? The flat sandal. Not only will your feet be thanking you after you’ve done the “Locomotion” and danced the rest of the night away, but it also just nails “the beach” look, without making the outfit too casual (say, if you wore…flip flops, like you might to go actually hang out at the beach).

The best part about all of these dresses and sandals, is that they’re all super-wearable! After the wedding, the dresses can wore dressed down for day or up for the office or to go out to dinner, and the sandals can all be wardrobe staples to replace those wretched Old Navy flip flops you’ve been collecting for $2.50/a pair each year.

I hope this helps not only Michelle, but all you prepping for a beach wedding this coming wedding season! As always, if you have post ideas or questions, you can always email me and I’ll do my best to help you out!

P.S. Stay tuned for a guest post on Stylelista Confessions next week while she is also in Hawaii! (Looks like everyone gets to go to Hawaii this month except for me–jeal!) :)

Wu on Target: Jason Wu Hits the Mark With Capsule Collection for Target

Being that Jason Wu is one of my favorite designers (and one of the shows I most look forward to during fashion week) it’s no surprise that I would be highly anticipating and coveting every piece in his highly affordable collection for Target, hitting stores next month.

While I kind of missed the boat on the previous big-name designer collaboration (Missoni for Target) I full intend on dishing out every dime in my wallet for every piece of Wu’s collection for Target, especially because not a single piece exceeds $49.99. Yep, you read that right: not a single piece of Jason Wu’s 53-piece collection for Target costs more than $50…hello, affordable fashion!

And while there are certainly a few pieces I’m not crazy about (uhhh, the blue flower wallpaper print scarf/bags and the cats with the bows around their necks on a scarf) I’m basically lusting after every sheer blouse, striped a-line dress and any hint of ruffles that I see.

Fanatical for Fair Isle

Despite the connotations of being a total prepster or a sporty ski bunny, fair isle has managed to be one of my favorite trends every winter, and this season it seems to be everywhere and on everything. There’s something so nostalgic and cozy about the intricately knitted pattern–with its diamonds, zig-zags, hearts, polka dots, snowflakes and other designs– that make it incredible attractive for the colder days; and if there’s any one thing that I can’t seem to stop picking up every time I go shopping: it’s fair isle. In fact, I own a few things off of the very list below! I’ve been so busy these last few weeks, I would like nothing more than to escape NYC to a snowy cabin retreat in Vermont, with a closet full of fair isle, a fire in the fireplace and a good cup of hot cocoa! You know what I mean?

Holiday Style Soiree with Milly NY

I can’t even believe I have the time or energy to write this post! In the midst of my crazy production schedule for Den of Thieves (as well as an audition for another show yesterday), I managed to pop into Milly NY’s fabulous Upper East Side store yesterday for a special blogger styling soiree! The task at hand was to style two outfits–one for holiday and one for every day–using the current Milly NY collections in the store. The blogger who gets the most votes on Milly’s Facebook Page will win not one, but TWO accessory packages–one to keep and one to give to a fabulous reader (which could be you!) So if you like my look, or you want the chance to win a really fabulous handbag, you should vote for me!

The bag that's up for grabs! Want a chance to win it? You have to vote my look as the top look for me to win first, and then I'll be able to give one away!

Styling parties remind me so much of being a little girl and playing dress up: best. parties. ever. Seriously. And yesterday, not only did I get to play dress up, but I got to play dress up with one of my favorite designers! I kept my colors classic and pretty muted and I tried to incorporate the same piece twice (for those of us who are on a budget!) which you’ll see below.

My Milly "Holiday" Look

For my Milly “Holiday” Look I chose the Virginia Wrap, the Cerise Ruffle Dress, the Amelia Tote, the Golden Discs Necklace, and the Links Enamel Bangles in Emerald and Black. Like this look? Head on over to Milly’s Facebook Page and “Like” it for me!

My "Every Day" Look

For my second look, or my “Every Day” look (even though I think it could be great for holiday too!) I wore
the Virginia Wrap again, the Silk Chiffon Peggy Sweater (which I ADORED!) only available at the Milly Madison Avenue Boutique, the Sunburst Pleat Skirt , the Victoria Leather Clutch, a vintage necklace (worn as a headpiece) with a gorgeous brooch and a pair of vintage earrings, handpicked by Michelle Smith for the Milly NY Madison Avenue store. Like this look? Get on over to Milly’s Facebook page and “Like” it for me!

I know I’d love to own these pieces in my wardrobe, but sadly, but current budget won’t allow that to happen…maybe once I start getting those Broadway paychecks! In the meantime, a girl can dream and play dress up, right? I hope you like my looks…we could win two accessory packages if you do! Head over to Milly NY‘s Facebook page, if you like them and vote for me and even if you don’t, you should check out the other fabulous bloggers who styled outfits too, and “Like” the Milly NY page while you’re there! … and if you’re in town be sure to check out Milly’s UES boutique at Madison Avenue and 73rd Street in Manhattan, the stylists in the store are amazing and super sweet!

What to Wear for Thanksgiving: Dresses

A first of many “what-to-wear” posts for the season!…what’s my favorite thing to wear for Thanksgiving? Without a doubt, it’s a dress…in fact, I can’t remember the last time I didn’t wear a dress or some form of stretch pant to Thanksgiving dinner, specifically for the necessity that I want to be able to eat and not have to unbutton anything or be uncomfortable. My favorite holiday, Thanksgiving tends to be my “splurge” day for the year and I often go a little over-the-top–especially with dessert–so I like to be comfy, but still chic, and photograph well in pictures. If you’re like me, I love dresses and so I’ve put together a list of 24, figure-flattering, must-haves ranging from $25-$200 that will keep you looking fabulous even after your second (okay, third) helping of apple pie!

Line to Look For: Jennifer Lopez for Kohl’s

I have to admit that I was a tad skeptical about Jennifer Lopez’s latest collection for Kohl’s, since it seems like every celeb is capitalizing on branding clothing and accessories these days. I remember way back when Jennifer released a “j.Lo” collection of the world’s cheesiest Lopez-inspired apparel (I even owned a few pieces) but the line slowly fizzled out and disappeared completely. Kohl’s, on the other hand, has been pretty spot-on, carefully selecting who designs what for their customer’s demographics, and if they were trying to target me–and other female 20-something, college student/part-time professionals, who blog and also happen to be a struggling actress–they succeeded.

I stopped into Kohl’s near my parents’ house this weekend with my mom for a few basics, and ended up completely enamored with all things Jennifer Lopez–for me, it felt like Lopez actually spent a lot more time developing the line not only to feel like something she would choose off a rack herself, but also something that works for the everyday gal, such as myself. In going through the pictures on Kohl’s website, I feel like photographs don’t do the clothing justice at all and there are a ton of pieces missing! I touched them, I tried them on and for their price point: they are seriously fabulous.

Jennifer Lopez Faux-Fur Ribbed Sweater Coat ON SALE $50.40 (original $84.00)

Jennifer Lopez Soft Tapered Ankle Pants ON SALE $37.80 (original $54.00) (sizes also range S-XL and are available in Short, Average and Long lengths)

Jennifer Lopez Ponte Sheath Dress ON SALE $42.00 (original $70.00)

Jennifer Lopez Faux-Fur Jacket ON SALE $112.50 (original $150.00)

And this time, Jenny from the Block didn’t stop with clothes–she ventured into sleepwear, handbags, winter accessories, jewelry, shoes and home decor…and while there are admittedly some super-cheesy pieces, most of I’d wear or use most of the pieces in the Jennifer Lopez for Kohl’s collection, including the selected pieces below:

Jennifer Lopez Isadora Sequin Clutch $89.00

Jennifer Lopez Platform High Heels ON SALE $34.99 (original $69.99)

Jennifer Lopez Glamour Lounge Embellished Chemise ON SALE $28.00 (original $40.00)

Jennifer Lopez bedding collection Old Hollywood Duvet Cover Set ON SALE $153.99-$202.99 (regularly $219.99-289.99)

I’m obsessed with all things Jennifer Lopez for Kohl’s, especially the bedding (above), the pieces with faux fur and her fabulous sequined tops (not shown). Rather than buying off Kohl’s website (unless you live in NYC and don’t have one near you, such as myself) I would suggest actually going in to the store to see the full collection and hopefully, you’ll love it as much as I do!

P.S. Kohl’s has offered SSOS readers a fabulous 20% off through 12/11/2011 by entering BIGGESTSALE at online checkout! And if you’re shopping in-store…here’s a coupon for you! When these offers expire, be sure to check out Kohl’s Deals page, for new deals posted all the time!

Fashion’s Night Out: NYC Edition

Fashion week is undoubtedly the most fun time of the year (well, two times a year for those of us who hit the tents), but has recently become fun for all every September with the institution of Fashion’s Night Out–a retail experience that cannot be missed in multiple cities. This year’s FNO is happening THIS Thursday, September 8th and here, on a silver platter, I’ve tallied up my top ten must-visit FNO fetes (in no particular order)!

1. Henri Bendel (712 5th Avenue) 3pm – 11pm

Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman, model Sasha Pivrova, and makeup artist Trish McEvoy will all be on hand, as well as a Bendel’s salon takeover by LYRALOVESTAR & the Hester Street Fair!

2. Kiehl’s Flagship Karaoke Karnival (109 3rd Avenue) 6:30-11pm

Hosted by AJ McLean (yeah, the Backstreet Boys’ resident bad boy!), Kiehl’s is hosting a night of karaoke (sing for free Kiehl’s lip balm), a chance to enter a raffle for Kiehl’s goodies, and complimentary food and alcohol! Other performers and “VIP” celebrity guests will make an appearance!

3. Salvatore Ferragamo Step Out Black & White Fete (655 5th Avenue) 7-9pm

Various socialites will be present at the Ferragamo event, but there’s nothing more fun than a black and white themed party, cocktails and hors d’ourves, with a percentage of sales for the evening benefitting the Lincoln Center Institute! Think they’ll exchange my ugly Ferragamo bag for me?

4. Missoni for Target Pop-Up Shop (1095 Sixth Avenue) 6-11pm

For the 2nd year in a row, Target is offering NYers the opportunity to shop a designer for Target’s collection before it hits the stores. (I believe last year was Rodarte!) I don’t even want to share this information with you because I want everything from the Missoni for Target collection for myself, but since I love you, here it is!

5. Disney Store’s Stylish Ever After (1540 Broadway) 6-11pm

If only I were under the age of ten, this event would be like a fairytale come true. The Disney Store invites you to be “stylish ever after…” Come get glam for Fashion’s Night Out and join us for a magical evening of pampering and accessorizing. Preview the latest Disney-inspired lifestyle product lines while being treated like royalty. Guests will receive an exclusive mini-manicure with the Disney Princess Designer Collection nail polish, and have the opportunity to customize their very own charm bracelet at the Kidada for Disney Store charm bar. Fashionistas will leave smelling as whimsical as Tinker Bell with a special sneak preview of the latest Disney Store Fragrance—Pixie Dust.

This year, the cast of "Glee" filmed an FNO-themed video for Vogue covering David Bowie's "Fashion" Click to view the music video! (P.S. How hot do they all look--especially Mark & Cory!)

6. FAMOUS footwear (Penn Plaza 250 West 34th Street) 6-9pm

Calling all aspiring top models! FAMOUS footwear’s 34th Street location will host a New York Fashion Week Casting Call from 6pm-8pm. The event will be hosted by Vh1 Glam God INDASHIO & America’s Next Top Model Cycle 8 Winner Jaslene Gonzalez. Winners will receive the opportunity of a lifetime to model down the runway at INDASHIO NY Fashion Week Show on Sept 13th.

7.  j.f. lazartigue (764 Madison Avenue 2nd Floor) 6-10pm

I might be a little biased because I’m a budding Broadway star, but this sounds way too fun, plus the proceeds benefit, what else? Impact Broadway! Support my future salary please. :) J.F. Lazartigue creator of Les Soins d’Exception “Haute Couture” for the hair honors Broadway’s musical HIT “Sister Act” in Beauty Meets Broadway. Cast Members will meet & greet lazartigue customers. Portions of the evenings proceeds of products sold will benefit Impact Broadway.

8. Jeffrey New York (449 West 14th Street) 6-11pm

More Broadway stars–but definitely a must for any Harry Potter fans! Daniel Radcliffe and Rose Hemingway from Broadway hit musical “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” will meet and greet fans and autograph Fashion’s Night Out merchandise. Columbia Sportswear will be on hand to showcase their Jeffrey co-branded design collaboration. The Clarins-Courtin girls will be selling FEED 10 bags, specially designed by Claire Courtin-Clarins. The bags will feature 3 of Clarins most iconic products.

9. Lord & Taylor (424 5th Avenue) 6-11pm

Undoubtedly FNO’s wildest event, iconic 5th avenue retailer Lord & Taylor might possibly be hosting the biggest FNO event. The store is transforming each of its floors to represent the different neighborhoods of NYC for your shopping enjoyment! Solange Knowles (Beyonce’s sister) will be on hand to shop and meet & greet fans from 6-9pm on the 2nd floor; Misook Doolittle of the line “Exclusively Misook” will meet & greet from 6-7pm on the 3rd floor; the 4th floor with host Vince Camuto and his fall collection, as well as a gift with purchase; From 6-8pm Jones New York’s resident style expert, Lloyd Boston takes wardrobe classics and shows you 7 Ways To Wear It–you can enjoy a fashion presentation, one-on-one style consultations, and a chance to win a makeover and walk the fashion show’s finale on the 5th floor; Heather Thomsen of Yummie Tummie will hang out on the 8th floor from 6-8pm to break all the laws of shapewear; on the 10th floor from 6-9pm, the NY Jets Cheerleaders will be signing their swimsuit calendars, posing for photos and dancing (you know, if you dare to leave your man up there); There are about 9 other guests slated on each of the unnamed floors that you know you want to see, and Lord & Taylor is a known FNO hangout for celebrities who aren’t otherwise engaged for the evening. See the full FNO roster.

10. Macy’s Flagship (151 West 34th Street) 6-11pm

I don’t dare step near the always-packed even at 9pm on a Sunday night Macy’s Herald Square, but if you’re a fan of any one of the amazing folks on their lineup, 151 W. 34th street is where you’ll want to be this Thursday. Here’s the rundown: Have the opportunity to meet Tommy Hilfiger and Joss Stone on the 2nd Floor in Men’s; join celebrity DJ, Samantha Ronson, for a dance party hosted by Gucci Guilty for Men! Main Floor- Fragrance Arcade; visit the “Karl Lagerfeld for Impulse Only at Macy’s” collection on the 2nd floor and perhaps supermodel Coco Rocha will help you shop; meet designer Rachel Roy and athlete Amar’e Stoudemire as they introduce their cool collaboration for Rachel Rachel Roy and host a “Hoops for a Cause” event. RTW- 3rd Floor; Visit luggage on the 9th floor where artist Charles Fazzino will launch the Fazzino by Heys USA Luggage Collection.
