Barneys New York Presents: Gaga’s Workshop

It’s Open!

Barneys NY, in collaboration with Lady Gaga, under the creative direction of Nicole Formichetti has released a collection of exclusive, special edition items which will be available for a limited time only at GAGA’S WORKSHOP!

For the first time ever, Barneys New York will convert an entire floor of its Madison Avenue flagship store into a dedicated space designed by assume vivid astro focus, for this holiday initiative. Working with the Barneys New York
team in collaboration with creative director Dennis Freedman, avaf has designed the interiors and signature artwork for GAGA’S WORKSHOP, which will also be featured on special holiday shopping bags and packaging.

And if that wasn’t cool enough, in honor of this project, Barneys is planning to donate 25% of sales from all items featured from the GAGA’S WORKSHOP Collection to the Born This Way Foundation, recently founded by Lady Gaga. The Born This Way focuses on acceptance and bravery in youth, to aid in learning to love and accept each other. (Go Gaga!)

In addition to the collection which is now available in stores, Barneys website has been selling limited-edition items from the “12 days of Gaga” leading up to the grand opening (which are available until they sell out). The items include a keychain with charms, a bow-shaped lollipop, a “diamond” teacup and more, all at fairly reasonable prices. If they whole collection is this affordable–I’m so there!
For those of you who don’t live in New York City, but love Gaga—not to fret! Gaga’sWorkshop.com has the full collection available, you just have to scroll to the bottom of the page to get to it –and it’ll be a fun ride scrolling down–the website is really adorably designed and is interactive! You can even make yourself into a real “little monster”, and play the Gaga Machine to unlock special prizes and codes…I unlocked a video with the code “LADYGAGA” if you want to see Gaga talk about her partnership with Barneys.

I think this initiative is a well-paired one and looks like a lot of fun! I may even pop into Barneys to see the space transformed, despite the holiday crowds I’m sure I’ll face. In fact, I may even pick up a few presents! Are you Little Monsters going to join me?

Go Pink: Elizabeth Hurley Steps Out to Stop Breast Cancer at Bloomingdale’s Ready, Set, Pink!

Last week, I had the privilege of sitting down with Estee Lauder Spokeswoman Elizabeth Hurley on behalf of The Makeup Girl to get the scoop on why raising breast cancer awareness is so important to her, how Bloomingdales and the Estee Lauder Companies are involved, her personal skincare routine and how her gig on Gossip Girl is her “dream job!”

Elizabeth is so passionate about ending breast cancer and raising awareness. After introducing myself and settling down she proclaimed, “Thank you so much for wearing pink!” (I mean, how could I not?) she told TMG, “I’m [involved in BCA because] I’m scared for my own family and friends, as well as people I don’t even know.”

And Elizabeth isn’t just a pretty face sitting behind the campaign–as the Estee Lauder spokesmodel, she’s worked hard to make sure that breast cancer awareness is one of their top priorities. To date, the Estee Lauder Companies’ brands and employees globally- and through fundraising initiatives with their retail partners- have raised close to $50 million in contributions to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation–an absolutely amazing accomplishment. Estee’s daughter-in-law, Evelyn Lauder, co-founded the Pink Ribbon, that we all recognize today as a global symbolization of hope and awareness; Since its inception in 1993 the Estee Lauder Companies have given away over 115 million pink ribbons! Elizabeth, herself, has been instrumental in the global illumination program, which lights up over 200 buildings around the world each year in pink.  Last year, the company was initiated into the Guinness Book of World Records for “Most Landmarks Illuminated for a Cause in 24 Hours,” which culminated with the first-ever illumination of the Empire State Building for BCA.

Get the Look: Jenna Ushkowitz’s hair by Theodore Leaf for Suave!

Suave Celebrity stylist Theodore Leaf said, “We had so much fun creating Jenna’s major ponytail for the 2011 Emmy Awards the look was certainly inspired by her dramatic gown. When we were testing it out we kept going higher and higher until we got the perfect drama, she was loving all of that height and hair! There is a certain fun energy you have when you can swing your hair back and forth!”

Jenna Ushkowitz arrives at the 63rd Annual Emmy Awards

1. To re-create this dramatic pony you want to start by getting your hair smooth. Use a small amount of the Suave Professionals Anti-Frizz cream and blowdry in sections.

2. Once your hair is smoothed out lay your head back and begin brushing from the top of the ears up to get the ponytail really high. When you have it in the right spot secure with a hair color-matching elastic (do not pull the ponytail tighter–this will mess the pony up)

3. Now apply a very small amount of Suave Professionals Mens Wet the Look Gel to the sides and back and use a comb to incorporate the flyaways– the drama of this look is all in the finishing.

4. Finally, spray the length of the ponytail with the Suave Professionals Vibrant Shine Spray and press with a hot flat iron to finish. Tip: If you need some extra length or fullness attach an extension (that matches your color) with a few bobby pins at the base.

Get the Look: Dianna Agron’s hair by Suave at the 63rd Annual Emmy Awards

Jenny Cho, Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist gives Dianna Agron a graceful, romantic up-do. “My inspiration for Dianna was the classic Grace Kelly. I wanted a hint of wave around her face to give her that elegance. Dianna recently cut her hair into a shaggy bob, but anything is possible when you have the right products,” says Cho.

Dianna Agron arriving at the 63rd Annual Emmy Awards

  1. Mist Suave Professionals Volumizing Root Boost Spray all over and layer on Suave Professionals Sleek Anti-Frizz Cream for a polished finish. The spray is great for creating texture to give hair some grit. Create a side part and blow dry with a small round brush.
  2. With a medium-sized curling iron, curl the heavy side vertically and pin to cool. Spray each section with Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Lightweight Hold Hairspray.
  3. Spray Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo  on the rest of the hair. Take a 1 1/2 inch section in the back and make a ponytail. Tease the ends and pin away.
  4. Tease the crown area and gently brush to create a bump. Mist a little hairspray and incorporate the ends into the bun and pin. Pull the sides into the bun as well.
  5. Once cool, unpin curls and with a small Mason Pearson brush, lightly brush out the curls, creating a soft bend. All you want is a little lift and softness around the front. Mist the whole shape with Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Extra Hold Hairspray for an all-night hold.

All products used on Dianna are SSOS tested and approved! We love to the Suave Professionals line!

Fashion’s Night Out: NYC Edition

Fashion week is undoubtedly the most fun time of the year (well, two times a year for those of us who hit the tents), but has recently become fun for all every September with the institution of Fashion’s Night Out–a retail experience that cannot be missed in multiple cities. 3. Salvatore Ferragamo Step Out Black & White Fete (655 5th Avenue) 7-9pm

Various socialites will be present at the Ferragamo event, but there’s nothing more fun than a black and white themed party, cocktails and hors d’ourves, with a percentage of sales for the evening benefitting the Lincoln Center Institute! Think they’ll exchange my ugly Ferragamo bag for me?

4. Missoni for Target Pop-Up Shop (1095 Sixth Avenue) 6-11pm

For the 2nd year in a row, Target is offering NYers the opportunity to shop a designer for Target’s collection before it hits the stores. (I believe last year was Rodarte!) I don’t even want to share this information with you because I want everything from the Missoni for Target collection for myself, but since I love you, here it is!

See the full FNO roster.

Get the Look: Olivia Munn wears NARS Cosmetics at InStyle’s Summer Soiree

NARS International Lead Makeup Artist Uzo created actress Olivia Munn’s bold look for InStyle’s Summer Soiree and you can steal her style for fall!

“Olivia has stunning hazel eyes that I really wanted to accentuate with shades of shimmery gold, copper and brown. To complement her eyes, we chose bold, red lips and pink cheeks for the perfect combination of ‘bombshell’ and ‘timeless beauty.’” – Uzo, NARS International Lead Makeup Artist.

Uzo used Key Largo Duo Eyeshadow and Fez Eyeshadow, to make Munn’s hazel eyes pop, followed by the new-for-fall Via Appia Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner (a coppery-brown). To highlight, Uzo used the Hollywoodland Soft Touch Shadow Pencil, and finished with a few coats of Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara.

Uzo flushed Munn’s cheeks with Desire Blush, and accentuated her cheekbones with the New Order Highlighting Blush (new for summer ’11)

To finish off her look, Uzo used the new-for-fall Mascate Pure Matte Lipstick (a bold red).

Both the Larger than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner in Via Appia and the Pure Matte Lipstick in Mascate are currently available exclusively at NARSCosmetics.com.

I think Olivia Munn looks absolutely gorgeous and I’m definitely stealing this makeup look for fall!

What do you think?

A Few of My Favorite Things

This past week was another very busy one. Besides completing my move (YAY!) the cast of my favorite show Glee! was also in town to film their finale episode for the season. My goal was to chase them around and eventually try to sing for one of them, which I’m sure would’ve done nothing to help me, I was convinced was going to get me a shot to meet one of the casting directors. While I did find the cast filming several times (and camp outside their trailers with my other Gleeks) I didn’t actually get to meet them, which was a total letdown. Bottom line: Glee! needs to film in NYC all the time and then crazed fans won’t be sleeping outside their hotel because we’ll be able to find them any time. Just sayin’.

So besides that, I finally started sleeping at my new place, and while it’s practically complete, I’m not going to share pictures just yet because I’m still waiting on a couch and a painting to arrive…but after that, I promise to share them. Plus, the redesigned, newly improved version of Shoes, Shirts & Other Sh!t finally launched, but has been a bit of  a headache for the last few months trying to find the time to make sure everything was the way I wanted it. What do you guys think?! I also wrapped up the Palladium Alliance program I was a part of, and despite my lack of involvement (the other bloggers felt like they weren’t at all involved either) I found out that my ring is going to be featured with a few others in an advertorial in the June issue of Harper’s Bazaar! I’m beyond excited and will share photos as soon as I can get my hands on them.

I’ve got another full week of school, auditions and work ahead of me, and I’m hoping to make a little time to see my friends, celebrate Cinco de Mayo with some delicious margaritas, celebrate Mother’s Day even though I won’t get to see my mom and put the finishing touches on my apartment. In the meantime, here are more than a few things currently keeping me happy, because it was so wonderful here all week, that I couldn’t choose just three.

Why hello, Matthew Morrison! Even though he's making a weird face and is on the phone, this is still my favorite picture from my Glee stalk-a-thon. How many people can actually say Matt Morrison looked at them? I can!

Walking through the Lower East Side this afternoon, I discovered the New York Marble Cemetary, which actually has walk-in vaults where people are buried. They had photos and news articles, as well as tours going on today. The cemetary was so quiet and serene, tucked away into an alley, you would never know it even existed!

My aunt came to town to help me finish getting situated with my apartment and it was her birthday! There was no way we couldn't celebrate, so I picked up this double dark chocolate cake from the Two Little Red Hens bakery on 2nd ave. Not only is the cake insanely gorgeous and detailed, it was also really delicious! Now I know my new go-to bakery on the UES!

I may have had to buy them for myself, but these peonies were just the thing missing my apartment. They're gorgeous and so fragrant...I'm going to be sad when they die, because I definitely can't start regularly allocating a portion of my paycheck for fresh flowers!

While staking out a filming of Glee! at the Intercontinental Hotel in Times Square (which also coincidentally happened to be where the cast was staying) I grabbed a "Très Chic" at Ça Va Brasserie. The drink, which featured champagne, pear flavored vodka and st. germain elderflower liqueur was also garnished with an edible candied hibiscus blossom! (And it tasted really good!!)

…a few more Glee! pictures:

Cory Monteith signing autographs for fans outside the Intercontinental Hotel

Dianna Agron (how pretty is she?!) leaving the Intercontinental Hotel after filming

Chord, Harry & Kevin getting ready to film (Mark was next to Chord, but I couldn't get him in the pic too!)

Cory & Lea filming a scene in the West Village. Finchel reunion, PLEASE!?

Hits & Misses: The Best and Worst of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards

I guess it’s about time I rally and write about all the fab fashion that happened at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards. Thankfully, the celebs came out and proved to make much better choices than those who showed up at the Grammys, and I commend them for it. Some obvious trends from the red carpet: nudes, sparkles, cap-sleeves, higher necklines, lower necklines, and bright red for spring!

Hits

Amy Adams

A lot of people were not too fond of Best Actress in a Supporting Role Nominee, Amy Adams’ choice of dress, but personally, I feel like she can do no wrong. Okay, I take that back…I hate the jewelry she has on, but otherwise this L’Wren Scott dress looks absolutely amazing on her, is a gorgeous color, and had just the right amount of glam for the Oscars. Way to go Amy!

Hailee Steinfeld

Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominee, Hailee Steinfeld, had on one of my favorite dresses of the night! A custom-designed (that she helped design, by the way) nude Marchesa ballgown, accessorized with no jewelry, a small clutch and a headband, was totally age appropriate for the 14-year old actress who was quoted in Parade saying “‘I don’t know many designers,’ when asked, several weeks before the show, what kind of dress she want[ed] to wear. ‘As long as it’s fun and really special!’” Special, indeed, Miss Steinfeld…designing your own dress for your first Academy Awards!

Halle Berry

When Halle Berry first appeared on the red carpet in this number, I thought, “Oh no! Not again with another bad dress Halle! You’re better than that,” after her atrocity at the SAG awards that looked like a nightgown someone had forgotten to finish sewing. It wasn’t until Halle got on stage to present the Lena Horne commemoration at the show that I realized how gorgeous this Marchesa dress actually was. Halle, you’ve redeemed yourself for now…but be careful!

Mandy Moore

Another one of my favorite dressed celebs was Mandy Moore, who made an appearance to perform a song that was nominated for an award. Looking glowing, gorgeous and very svelte in a sparkling, nude Monique Lhuillier gown, with a pop of color on her lips, Mandy definitely made a comeback from her bedridden character (who was killed off in her second episode appearance) on Grey’s Anatomy.

Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank has really been hitting the nail on the head with her fashion choices lately! She looked incredible at the SAG awards, and does it again in this beaded and feathered grey Gucci dress. I love, love, love!!

Jennifer Hudson

Another lovely lady making tons of excellent fashion choices in the recent weeks is definitely Jennifer Hudson, who has been accessorizing her new, slim figure with some of the most fabulous dresses she can possibly find! She looks ravishing in this low v-neck, tangerine-colored Versace, and damn, does that girl look happy or what?! I want some of her happy pills. Seriously.

Marisa Tomei

Another dress I seriously adored was Marisa Tomei’s a vintage, 1950s-era navy gown by Charles James from Lily et Cie. She always makes such interesting choices, which occasionally flop–but at least the girl takes a risk! This one paid off for her. The color was gorgeous, and the simplicity of the dress until the hip really ups the “wow” factor of unexpected burst of tulle at the bottom.

Natalie Portman

FINALLY NATALIE PORTMAN!! Finally!! I’ve been waiting for you to make a good choice at an awards show for 2 months now!!! I’m so proud of you. Natalie looks stunning in this violet/plum color child Rodarte dress with Swarovski crystals around the neckline. The dress is seriously the most perfect color on her. Ever. And…it hides the growing baby bump (while still showing that you’re obviously pregnant). It just looks so much more comfortable than her SAG dress, and so much more put together than her Golden Globes dress. I’m so happy to have her back on my best dressed list. THANK YOU!

Michelle Williams

Best Actress in a Leading Role nominee, Michelle Williams, definitely redeemed herself in this striking Chanel gown from the Golden Globes awards where she opted for some whimsically ugly daisy-covered Valentino gown. This dress didn’t photograph well, but the closeups of the beading on this dress are just absolutely stunning.

Mila Kunis

Last, but certainly not least, Mila Kunis in a peekaboo, lilac-colored Elie Saab gown takes the cake. The combination of lace and ruffles, with the lace detail on the bust was sweet and sexy at the same time, which oozed a great deal of glamor for the Oscars. I love this dress!

Misses

Cate Blanchett

I’m not sure what everyone “loves” about this couture Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci dress. From the waist down the dress looks lovely, but it looks like the bust is missing something critical and the squared-off shoulders threw me for a loop! And the back was really pretty…but it was too tight, because it created back-fat overhang that the obviously, very svelte Cate Blanchett, doesn’t normally have.

Jennifer Lawrence

Best Actress in a Supporting Role Nominee, Jennifer Lawrence was the first nominee to hit the carpet. At first I thought she looked great in this super simple red Calvin Klein gown, and then as I started reading through Twitter, someone commented, “it looks like the Baywatch bathing suits were repurposed to make her gown.” Damn, straight: They were right. Jennifer Lawrence looked as though she should be running through the sand carrying her buoy-thing to save some drowing hottie, just like Pam Anderson. Poor kid, better luck next time.

Melissa Leo

Winner of Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Melissa Leo looked like an absolute mess, just like her acceptance speech, in this hideous lace-layer over-metallic Marc Bouwer gown. I’m not sure what happened…did the doilies on the end tables and Christmas wrapping paper have a child? Nothing about this dress is right–the neck is too high, the sleeves are too stiff.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman has been so disappointing lately. While everyone loved her gown at the Grammys, I thought she looked like a trainwreck, and this beaded, printed…peacock-esque Christian Dior dress is no exception. As far as I’m concerned, nothing about this dress works, and it does nothing for her.

Penelope Cruz

As she and hubby Javier Bardem sashayed down the red carpet, all anyone could gasp about Penelope Cruz was how great she looked after just giving birth a few weeks ago. I’m sorry, but she still has major baby weight going, it shows in this L’Wren Scott dress and the dress looks like something a Vegas showgirl would wear. I think Penelope could’ve gone with a far more flattering dress to accomodate the baby weight she hasn’t lost quite yet. Sorry, P!

Reese Witherspoon

It pains me to put Reese Witherspoon on my worst dressed list because normally I’d consider her a style icon, one who I’ve often tried to emulate. And she’s one of my favorite actresses. While I like how “fresh” she tried to be channeling Brigette Bardot with her hair-do, there was something all off about her. The hair was way too 50′s, and her Giorgio Armani Prive gown looked very similar to a vintage Valentino that Julia Roberts wore just a few years ago.

Scarlett Johansson

Oh, ScarJo…what is this Dolce & Gabbana mess you’re wearing? The peek-a-boo lace clearly is not as tasteful as what Mila Kunis managed to pull off, and I just can’t appreciate the black undergarments happening under the gown. While I admit her bravery in wearing this, it just doesn’t work. In addition to the dress not working, her eyeshadow is completely not even in the right color family, and her hair was a hot mess…no really…she looked like she just rolled out of bed.

Well, friends, that’s about it for awards show season! Who were your faves–best and worst dressed? What did you think of the “Frankaway” (yeah, someone named Anne Hathaway and James Franco, Frankaway. I kind of love it.) hosts?
