NYC Milestones

I still can’t believe I live in New York City.

Some of us transplants still have our moments. Mine was on the 4 train today when the standard message came over the intercom, “This is a message from the New York City Police Department,” I hear it every day, it’s not unusual in any way. But today it I heard it around 7pm on my way back from downtown (my first-ever trip to Century 21, embarrassing, I know) and it struck me, “I live in New York City!” I wanted to squeal it out as I sat on the quiet train, but kept my mouth shut so they wouldn’t have officers waiting to escort me to Bellevue when I stepped off.

It’s been over a year and for the ten years or so I dreamed of living here, I never thought I’d actually move here. I live here. Sometimes I forget that I live in NYC because I get lost in the places I only go to every day–my apartment, my school, my office building, “my” Starbucks, “my” bagel place…you get the point… occasionally you lose how massive and amazing this city actually is and I remembered it today, for some reason.

A year ago today, to the date, I was attending my first beauty event for The Makeup Girl. I remember it because I was so excited–I got dressed up and I showered and primped–and was totally, totally late–but I met some amazing gals that night!

So that’s #1: the 1-year anniversary of my first beauty blogger event.

#2 I spit out subway directions as if I’ve lived here my whole life. Today, a woman attempted to stop me during rush hour in the middle of Grand Central…I only half listened to her–she wanted to know how to get the NQR trains… “Take the 7 or the Shuttle to Times Square transfer there,” I yelled as I ran down the stairs to catch my train. I didn’t even have to think about it or consult a map. Not rocket science, but I do it for people who are clueless all the time. I was that person once.

#3 I drove here for the first time a few weeks ago. No, like, I drove in the city. I brought my car in one day when I had to leave and go back to MA the next day and I drove in midtown. 51 blocks into midtown, to be exact. All the way across 14th street to 10th avenue and then up to 59th. (I say 51 blocks, because I actually drove up to 65th to find a parking lot). And it wasn’t scary. I thought I’d be petrified and get into an accident and freak out. But it was totally fine and it felt a hell-of-a lot safer than a cab ride.

#4 I’ve discovered this: When all else fails: Walk. Sure, it’s a big city, but sometimes the subway and the bus are just too damn crowded. So I walk…leisurely to where ever I need to go…even when my feet hurt. I used to do it all the time before I lived here–just wander around– because I had no idea where I was going. But now I wander with the purpose of eventually getting to my destination, while discovering things I wouldn’t have seen on the bus or train. It’s amazing what you can find–things you’ve passed a million times and never noticed before.

#5 I’ve found “my” spots. The gay Starbucks barista on 1st avenue calls me “babe” and asks if I’m getting my “usual”. I can walk from my apartment to there in 4 minutes flat. All six different baristas that work the 3 days I’m at the office at the one in my office building know my order. My bagel spot (Bagel Boss on 1st avenue) greets me with “How are you?” Instead of “what can I get you?” now. I even see the same police officers at the train stations, and the same drivers on the bus who greet me differently than when I was just a face in a crowd. I love feeling like I’m part of the “in” crowd in NYC.

Just the other day, a classmate said to me, “it’s so cool that you live in the city,” and I said, “but you live in Brooklyn don’t you?” and she said, “yeah, but it’s not the same thing. I’ve lived in Brooklyn my whole life. It’s not Manhattan.”

And today, just like it occasionally does– it hit me: it is really freakin’ cool that I live here.

A Few of My Favorite Things

I had such a relaxing weekend, just doing things that I wanted to do and nothing else. Yesterday, I hit the Brooklyn Flea for the first time in almost a year (and if you go back in my posts about a year, you should find me gushing about how great it is! I used to go more often when I lived in Harlem than I go now, living in the East Village, which is pathetic) and last night I stayed up late watching musicals on film in bed. I watched the 1950′s cast of 7 Brides for 7 Brothers. I totally want to play Millie someday! Besides my irrational break-out into full-body hives (I have remnants on my face, of all places) I’d call the weekend a success and there are a few things currently keeping me happy (but 1 in particular that’s probably annoying my neighbors. Guess which one!)

The 1987 Cast Recording of Anything Goes after seeing the 2011 Broadway revival Last Thursday

My gorgeous new mixed chain and pearl necklace that I scored from my new friends at Estate Jewels at the Brooklyn Flea! (Clicking on this will take you to their Facebook page)

Gorgeous vintage 1950's-era marquis cut studs I scored at the Antiques Garage in Chelsea

The manicure I keep touching up. It's super sparkly and keeps winning compliments from random NYers: OPI Katy Perry Collection "Teenage Dream" and OPI Black Shatter. Get your hands on a bottle of the Black Shatter...it really is all it's cracked up to be!

I’m Not Myself

I’m definitely not myself lately. I’ve been having tons of personal and professional issues the last few weeks that are totally getting me down. I feel like I wrote this post just a few weeks ago to apologize for not writing, and now I’m writing it again, because I’m feeling uninspired to write anything else fashionable or beautiful, and I’ve been too busy to even cook anything yummy worth posting. (My diet has consisted of several cups of coffee per day, takeout for breakfast and lunch and frozen dinners at home).

Lame. I know. You don’t have to tell me, but even with the swirl of fashion week past me, I feel like I still don’t have much to say about it, or anything else (and I owe other people I write for articles…). I think in addition to the things getting me down, I’ve been making a lot of decisions lately, with only 6-ish months of college left, that could be life-changing. I’ve made the decision to start pursuing my career in acting and singing again, which I’m beyond excited about, but it’s a hard business to crack.

I attended the opening night of previews of Anything Goes on Broadway last night with its brand new cast featuring Joel Grey and Sutton Foster. I haven’t been to a show in ages because I simply don’t have time with school and work and everything else, but I needed to see a show and write a critique for my chorus class at school. It’s really pathetic that school forced me to make time to see something I love so much. I’ve wanted to see Anything Goes since I sang its title song in a voice lesson recital in middle school and it was everything I hoped it would be and more. I sat in the audience, mouthing the words to every song and all I could think was, “I want to be on that stage.” Being at a show that I had wanted to see for so long made me so insanely happy that I almost cried.

See a video of their rehearsal without costumes:

I’ve known for a long time that the stage is where I belong, it’s just the path of getting there that’s hindered me. Freshman year, I ended up in Smalltown, Pennsylvania, USA…nowhere near a city to see performances, or go on auditions and every college I chose managed to have a non-existent drama club, no musical groups to sing with and I was too penniless to continue taking voice lessons (and I “borrowed” enough money from my parents to ask for anymore).

I think at this point, I’ve told just about everyone I know, whether they know I sing or not that to be on Glee is “my life’s goal”. I love Glee like nobody’s business and I would kill to be part of that cast, but I’ll take any reputable stage.

So if I’m quiet the next few weeks, I’m sorry. I’m auditioning, I’m doing schoolwork, apartment-hunting and much more. I’m trying to ease back into writing daily or at least, more frequently…and very shortly, a beautiful, new Shoes, Shirts & Other Sh!t should be live (just a couple more kinks to work out)!

Today, even though I feel like I could contribute something fashion-related, I don’t feel right about it with the tragedy in Japan, and the tsunami nearing the West Coast. Please know you’re all in my thoughts and please, please be safe.

Lots of love,

Erika

The Infamous W Bag Has Arrived!…But I Don’t Love It.

Yesterday morning when I got to my office, I saw a large brown handle bag sitting inconspicuously by our Administrative Assistant’s desk. I wandered over closer to see a Salvatore Ferragamo label with my name on it and instantly freaked! My W bag had finally arrived!

I scooped up the bag and took it over to my desk where I called my mom and put her on speaker for the momentous occasion of opening the box. As I tore away piles of air-paks and tissue paper…

There it was.

Hmm. Not quite what I expected, you? My mom heard the instant sound of disappointment in my voice and when I sent her that picture, she understood why: It’s kind of hideous. I thought about the ways that I could work it into my spring and summer wardrobe, but I’m really just not feeling it. Lara from Pretty Connected feels the same way, and we’re waiting for Rachel of Suitcase Secrets to get home from a vacation to see if she gets the same one, since she was the winner chosen by Ferragamo.

As I’m sure you remember, I entered the contest for The W List back in November…I was one of several bloggers who was introduced to the list before the contest even was released to the public and I bugged everyone I knew for 2 months to help me win. And I did…the last day I managed to get voted into 5th place, just in time to win.

What a letdown…for everyone. As I sent the picture of the bag around yesterday, I got positive words of encouragement, “straw is so in for this season”, “really cute!” and “can’t wait for my picture with it,” but as the day progressed, I got the most honest email of the day from my coworker Tania, “You’re going to hate me, but I don’t like it. I was really hoping for an all-leather one for you.  I’m sure you’re going to accessorize the heck out of it, but that’s just not me.”

I thought I’d be the talk of the town when this bag arrived–the NYC college student/fashion blogger with a priceless Ferragamo bag…but it’s really something I should give to my 80-year-old aunt. This bag is totally age-appropriate for her. For a contest that was supposed to be about being a trendsetter and jetsetter, you would think that a more classic version of the bag, such as the navy or white croc, or the beige perforated leather…or even the red leather would’ve been the bag that we’d won. (And I’m fairly certain those are actually cheaper than this bag.) I can’t see any of the trendsetters that started the W List carrying this bag. I feel duped, and I know everyone who helped me win feels pretty duped too (whether they said so or not)!

I probably sound ungrateful…after all, it is a Ferragamo bag… and unless I stopped buying Starbucks every day, gave up takeout, and stopped shopping on flash sale sites, I probably wouldn’t be able to save enough money to ever buy myself one…and I think we all know I’m not giving up shopping, lattes or takeout anytime in the near future. I’m definitely not ungrateful though–of the many I have entered, that contest was one of the hardest to win and I appreciate all of you who helped me by voting or encouraging your friends to vote–whatever you did…thank you, again!

(Shameless plug now…I’m auditioning for The X Factor in April and if I make it past preliminary rounds and I get to Simon Cowell, I expect all of you to use your excellent voting skills again to call in and vote for me!) ;)

I’ve gotten some very interesting suggestions and comments on the bag: sell it on eBay and buy a better one (the bag retails at Neiman Marcus for $2,750); sell it and use the money to take a vacation; “when you’re done with it, we can use it to play checkers!!”; try it out for a few weeks and see if I like it, write a letter to Ferragamo and demand a different bag; or take it to Neiman’s and be completely honest about winning it and hating and see if they’ll let me trade it for a different W bag…I’ve also gotten, “so you annoyed us for that? I could’ve made it,” and “It looks like a briefcase with granny squares lol we should’ve voted you higher on the list.”

All interesting suggestions…but what do you think I should do with the bag? What do you think of it?

And while I’m at it…I’ll mention that I received two GORGEOUS leather handbags from new brand Cassidy Randall (I can’t wait to tell you about them soon!) yesterday that they’re letting me borrow. I’d prefer to keep them and have my Ferragamo bag on loan…and they’re only worth a fraction of the cost of the Ferragamo.

Hits & Misses: The Best and Worst of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards

I guess it’s about time I rally and write about all the fab fashion that happened at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards. Thankfully, the celebs came out and proved to make much better choices than those who showed up at the Grammys, and I commend them for it. Some obvious trends from the red carpet: nudes, sparkles, cap-sleeves, higher necklines, lower necklines, and bright red for spring!

Hits

Amy Adams

A lot of people were not too fond of Best Actress in a Supporting Role Nominee, Amy Adams’ choice of dress, but personally, I feel like she can do no wrong. Okay, I take that back…I hate the jewelry she has on, but otherwise this L’Wren Scott dress looks absolutely amazing on her, is a gorgeous color, and had just the right amount of glam for the Oscars. Way to go Amy!

Hailee Steinfeld

Best Actress in a Supporting Role nominee, Hailee Steinfeld, had on one of my favorite dresses of the night! A custom-designed (that she helped design, by the way) nude Marchesa ballgown, accessorized with no jewelry, a small clutch and a headband, was totally age appropriate for the 14-year old actress who was quoted in Parade saying “‘I don’t know many designers,’ when asked, several weeks before the show, what kind of dress she want[ed] to wear. ‘As long as it’s fun and really special!’” Special, indeed, Miss Steinfeld…designing your own dress for your first Academy Awards!

Halle Berry

When Halle Berry first appeared on the red carpet in this number, I thought, “Oh no! Not again with another bad dress Halle! You’re better than that,” after her atrocity at the SAG awards that looked like a nightgown someone had forgotten to finish sewing. It wasn’t until Halle got on stage to present the Lena Horne commemoration at the show that I realized how gorgeous this Marchesa dress actually was. Halle, you’ve redeemed yourself for now…but be careful!

Mandy Moore

Another one of my favorite dressed celebs was Mandy Moore, who made an appearance to perform a song that was nominated for an award. Looking glowing, gorgeous and very svelte in a sparkling, nude Monique Lhuillier gown, with a pop of color on her lips, Mandy definitely made a comeback from her bedridden character (who was killed off in her second episode appearance) on Grey’s Anatomy.

Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank has really been hitting the nail on the head with her fashion choices lately! She looked incredible at the SAG awards, and does it again in this beaded and feathered grey Gucci dress. I love, love, love!!

Jennifer Hudson

Another lovely lady making tons of excellent fashion choices in the recent weeks is definitely Jennifer Hudson, who has been accessorizing her new, slim figure with some of the most fabulous dresses she can possibly find! She looks ravishing in this low v-neck, tangerine-colored Versace, and damn, does that girl look happy or what?! I want some of her happy pills. Seriously.

Marisa Tomei

Another dress I seriously adored was Marisa Tomei’s a vintage, 1950s-era navy gown by Charles James from Lily et Cie. She always makes such interesting choices, which occasionally flop–but at least the girl takes a risk! This one paid off for her. The color was gorgeous, and the simplicity of the dress until the hip really ups the “wow” factor of unexpected burst of tulle at the bottom.

Natalie Portman

FINALLY NATALIE PORTMAN!! Finally!! I’ve been waiting for you to make a good choice at an awards show for 2 months now!!! I’m so proud of you. Natalie looks stunning in this violet/plum color child Rodarte dress with Swarovski crystals around the neckline. The dress is seriously the most perfect color on her. Ever. And…it hides the growing baby bump (while still showing that you’re obviously pregnant). It just looks so much more comfortable than her SAG dress, and so much more put together than her Golden Globes dress. I’m so happy to have her back on my best dressed list. THANK YOU!

Michelle Williams

Best Actress in a Leading Role nominee, Michelle Williams, definitely redeemed herself in this striking Chanel gown from the Golden Globes awards where she opted for some whimsically ugly daisy-covered Valentino gown. This dress didn’t photograph well, but the closeups of the beading on this dress are just absolutely stunning.

Mila Kunis

Last, but certainly not least, Mila Kunis in a peekaboo, lilac-colored Elie Saab gown takes the cake. The combination of lace and ruffles, with the lace detail on the bust was sweet and sexy at the same time, which oozed a great deal of glamor for the Oscars. I love this dress!

Misses

Cate Blanchett

I’m not sure what everyone “loves” about this couture Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci dress. From the waist down the dress looks lovely, but it looks like the bust is missing something critical and the squared-off shoulders threw me for a loop! And the back was really pretty…but it was too tight, because it created back-fat overhang that the obviously, very svelte Cate Blanchett, doesn’t normally have.

Jennifer Lawrence

Best Actress in a Supporting Role Nominee, Jennifer Lawrence was the first nominee to hit the carpet. At first I thought she looked great in this super simple red Calvin Klein gown, and then as I started reading through Twitter, someone commented, “it looks like the Baywatch bathing suits were repurposed to make her gown.” Damn, straight: They were right. Jennifer Lawrence looked as though she should be running through the sand carrying her buoy-thing to save some drowing hottie, just like Pam Anderson. Poor kid, better luck next time.

Melissa Leo

Winner of Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Melissa Leo looked like an absolute mess, just like her acceptance speech, in this hideous lace-layer over-metallic Marc Bouwer gown. I’m not sure what happened…did the doilies on the end tables and Christmas wrapping paper have a child? Nothing about this dress is right–the neck is too high, the sleeves are too stiff.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman has been so disappointing lately. While everyone loved her gown at the Grammys, I thought she looked like a trainwreck, and this beaded, printed…peacock-esque Christian Dior dress is no exception. As far as I’m concerned, nothing about this dress works, and it does nothing for her.

Penelope Cruz

As she and hubby Javier Bardem sashayed down the red carpet, all anyone could gasp about Penelope Cruz was how great she looked after just giving birth a few weeks ago. I’m sorry, but she still has major baby weight going, it shows in this L’Wren Scott dress and the dress looks like something a Vegas showgirl would wear. I think Penelope could’ve gone with a far more flattering dress to accomodate the baby weight she hasn’t lost quite yet. Sorry, P!

Reese Witherspoon

It pains me to put Reese Witherspoon on my worst dressed list because normally I’d consider her a style icon, one who I’ve often tried to emulate. And she’s one of my favorite actresses. While I like how “fresh” she tried to be channeling Brigette Bardot with her hair-do, there was something all off about her. The hair was way too 50′s, and her Giorgio Armani Prive gown looked very similar to a vintage Valentino that Julia Roberts wore just a few years ago.

Scarlett Johansson

Oh, ScarJo…what is this Dolce & Gabbana mess you’re wearing? The peek-a-boo lace clearly is not as tasteful as what Mila Kunis managed to pull off, and I just can’t appreciate the black undergarments happening under the gown. While I admit her bravery in wearing this, it just doesn’t work. In addition to the dress not working, her eyeshadow is completely not even in the right color family, and her hair was a hot mess…no really…she looked like she just rolled out of bed.

Well, friends, that’s about it for awards show season! Who were your faves–best and worst dressed? What did you think of the “Frankaway” (yeah, someone named Anne Hathaway and James Franco, Frankaway. I kind of love it.) hosts?

NARS worked with makeup artist Tasha Brown to create the look for Florence Welch, of Florence & The Machine for both her red carpet and performance looks at the Academy Awards.

ON THE RED CARPET:

“I was inspired by the thought of a beautiful English rose. With Florence’s lacy Valentino dress, we wanted to round out the look with warm shades,” said Tasha about the singer’s red carpet look. Below are the NARS products that Tasha used:

An Uninspired Week

I’ve been so down in the dumps all week, with work stressing me out and running back forth between NYC and Massachusetts for appointments, commitments and social engagements, that I’ve had no inspiration to write anything worth reading, but it’s Friday and I’m feeling like I need to breathe a sigh of relief that Sunday signals the beginning of a new week–and several weeks to come that I’m not planning to do any traveling whatsoever. Just me and NYC.

Speaking of NYC, when I was in the city (just one night all week) I decided to order Chinese takeout. Shocking, I know…single girl all alone in NYC orders Chinese takeout. Anyways… I rarely eat fortune cookies, but I always crack them open to read the fortunes. And despite my lack of interest in eating them, I always thought that if you eat the cookie the fortune has better luck of working. Well, my takeout had just one single cookie for the first time in years, and I cracked it open to read, “Wish you a good journey :) ” …with all of my lucky numbers on the back of it…It freaked me out a little bit in a good way, because as I’m preparing to graduate I’ve been pursing all of my options, especially where acting and singing are concerned. I took this fortune as the wish to the journey I’m going to take during this year…a journey a tarot card reader also told me I’d be taking that would change the entire course of my life this year. Needless to say, I’m a tad freaked out, but mostly very excited.

So besides that for the week….

Back on Monday, I did a little bit of shopping (really little..honestly!) and I was on the hunt for just a few things:

1. Sephora by OPI Glee nail polishes in Diva-in-Training and Miss Bossy Pants

2. OPI Black Shatter

3. Something to fix my still tattered and destroyed hair

I did okay, I was 2 for 4 (4 things, because there are two Glee polishes listed). When I went into Sephora, I asked one of the sales clerks for help and she pointed me in the direction of the display. I darted over to find….one Miss Bossy Pants and two bottles of Diva-in-Training! HOORAY! Until I got over the register and the sales clerk picked up Miss Bossy Pants and said, “this is the tester. We don’t have any more of these, I checked for someone else earlier.” 1 for 2. I’m still on the hunt for a bottle of Miss Bossy Pants…

Behold, Sephora by OPI Glee Collection in Diva-in-Training with OPI Black Shatter on top!

Then onto the beauty supply store, where I prayed for some sort of miracle product to fix my dead, straw-like hair, and that I’d find a coveted bottle of OPI Black Shatter. I was 0 for 2 here. They had OPI Black Shatter, but it sold out in less than 24 hours and basically everything I’ve been doing to try to fix my hair is really all that I can do. There are no other magical products to help me.

Okay, so you’re wondering how I’m 2 for 4 right? Because so far I’ve only gotten one of the things on my list…Well…surprise, surprise…when I returned from NYC yesterday there was a package for me from my mom, and guess what she tracked down for me? A bottle of OPI Black Shatter! Now I’m 2 for 4, and she made me smile for the first time, basically, all week. Is she the best or what?!

And as for my hair…I’m getting a hair cut tomorrow, with the hope that it will alleviate some of the damage, and I’m expecting to cut at least 2-3 inches off…sniffle…that I’ve been painstakingly growing out since I got an awful haircut in Chelsea last March.

I’ll keep you posted on that…

I’m hoping to get back into the rhythm of writing more, catching up on Fashion Week and sharing some exciting new projects with you over the next few weeks…and don’t forget to look for my Oscars coverage this weekend! OH and big changes coming to the look and feel of the blog soon too! =)

xoxo, E

First Look: Tibi Fall/Winter 2011

While there was nothing exceptionally remarkable about the first few looks that strolled down the runway at Tibi, I was pretty neutral about the neutral palette of the collection…until a model popped out in a neon pink hat paired with menswear-esque greys and browns.

Tibi didn’t have me until the 4th or 5th look, when a model wearing a tea-length skin-tight cable-knit grey sweaterdress strutted down the runway. And then Amy Smilovic had my full attention.

From there on out, the rest of the collection seemed cohesive and attention grabbing–billowing watercolor-esque dresses paired with shearling jackets, a stunning damask printed red and white a-line mini dress (a hoop-skirt and high neck top with similar print was the final piece of the collection), followed by a couple of dresses featuring white applique chiffon with black edging, fashioned to almost seem like ruffles.

Tibi also featured metallic gold lace, crochet, a couple of pieces that were a deep teal color with rosettes and ruffles…pictures don’t even do them justice.

What started out a bit on the rough side, ended up being one of my favorite collections (along with only two others!) of the Fall/Winter 2011 season.

Gleek Out With New “Glee” Inspired Polishes from Sephora by OPI

"Slushied" from the Sephora by OPI "Glee" collection

If you’ve been reading this blog or following me on Twitter, even just for a little while, then you know Glee is one of my favorite shows. While it’s a little over the top from the musical groups I was involved in during my high school days (we only had one “pops” concert per season where we could sing something fairly current) it does take me back to auditioning for solos, harmonizing with my fellow group mates, and practicing all the time.

Anyways, Sephora by OPI has launched a new Glee-inspired collection, and I seriously couldn’t be more excited! The collection additionally comes as a kit with 6 miniature polishes inspired by everyone’s favorite Glee characters.

The kit includes:
- Miss Bossy Pants: A rich raspberry as show stopping as Rachel herself
- Slushied: There’s no need to duck from this opaque blue
- Celibacy Club: Even if it’s only part of the show, express your inner angel with this glimmering, diamond top coat (Mini Kit exclusive)
- Gleek Out: A glittery lime green that will have everyone singing your praises
- Sue vs. Shue: Stay a step ahead of the rivalry with this rebellious navy blue (Mini Kit exclusive)
- Express Yourself to Yourself: Even more entertaining than Sue Sylvester in a music video, this coral shimmer shade will have people talking (Mini Kit exclusive)

The "Glee" Minis kit $24

My favorite though, is Sephora’s description of what it does: “Give your fingertips the next solo as you Gleek out with this set of nail products. Use any color alone, or mix and match to create your own unique look.”

The individual polishes also include colors like, “Diva-in-Training” an opaque poppy pink, “Hell to the No” an opaque bright royal purple with fine gold glitter, “Mash Up”  an opaque opalescent gray, and “Who Let the Dorks Out?” an opaque metallic peacock green.

The kit of 6 miniatures is available for $24 or each polish (with the exception of “Express Yourself to Yourself”) are available individually in full size for $9.50.

I can’t wait to get my hands (get it?) on Diva-in-Training and Miss Bossy Pants! These polishes are available in stores and online now for a limited time!
